Empowered Feet Build Strong Foundations

Step into the new year with intention & clarity — starting with your feet.

Here we are at the top of the year. There’s something very special and tender about beginnings. Cleansing the old and stepping into something new. Endless possibility, new perspective. Delicate and on the verge.

The way we begin something has meaning. It sets the tone for what comes next.

No matter what we’re starting, we always carry parts of the past with us into the new, so that whatever we’re set to enter into now has the flavor and texture of all that has come before.

We begin our 2022 journey right where we are – standing on our own two feet. But what are those feet doing here?

How you imprint them – how they meet the earth – has to do with your unique dance with gravity. Learn more about that dance and how to find your unique rhythm within it right here.

Your feet connect, root and propel you into space.

Ever feel uprooted, ungrounded, or simply disconnected? Pay a little attention to your feet and that feeling can change dramatically.

Articulate Feet

With 28 bones and 33 joints, the foot is designed to move, shift and shape to the ground below. But our modern roads, flattened terrain and shoe wearing haven’t given our feet the opportunity to really show off what they’re made of.

With so many joints in such a small space, this stunning architecture is meant to be as articulate as our hands (more on the hands later in the year).

And those toes of ours – they are our antennae, helping us to navigate the world at our feet, to sense what’s there before stepping on or in something unpleasant or possibly dangerous.

Shoes destroy your toes’ sensitivity, as well as that lovely arch. With every step inside a show, the foot becomes more attuned to moving as one single piece instead of many, which means many of those 33 joints stop moving altogether.

Our everyday patterns of sitting, standing and walking on flat surfaces wither away the mobility of our heel along with that of our ankles, making the challenge of articulate feet even more of one.

By mobilizing your toes, feet and ankles, you can reclaim and empower your feet to move with their Creator-given grace once again. And since our feet are our base of support, the better they connect to the earth below, the better the rest of the body will respond with easing tensions – even as far up as the shoulders, neck, and jaw!

Try this simple practice that helps you jump back into your feet and connect to the earth below, allowing you to feel the power of what came before you as you propel into the future.

If you tried the exercise above or if you have your own ways of getting your feet into shape, share your ideas below!
